Event – April 2nd, 2019
On Thursday 28th March, DCHI took part in the Netherlands Enterprise Agency’s event on Innovation within humanitarian aid, alongside being a participant at their information market. The event was organised in preparation for an upcoming UN Procurement seminar, with the goal of emphasising innovative potential that the Netherlands have to offer in the humanitarian sector, whilst showcasing existing initiatives and organisations.
The day started with a fruitful presentation and panel discussion on the barriers and successes of innovative work in the humanitarian sector from varying perspectives. This included representatives Marjanne van der Helm from UNICEF and Juriaan Lahr from the Netherlands Red Cross, alongside a presentation by Jelte van Wieren from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The work of DCHI was actively recognised as being a key example of innovation in the sector. Marjanne included the Safety and Protection initiative as an example of “encouraging progress in the field of innovation” in humanitarian processes.
A highly encouraging thematic focus was the need to collaborate, particularly between the public and private sector. The representative for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the initial inspiration to create DCHI is rooted in this topic. Jelte van Wieren actively recognised that refining and coordinating innovative ideas, through a multi-perspective coalition, offers the best chance for a project to be sustainable and scalable.
The information market that followed was attended by several organisations, many of which were also DCHI partners. Some examples of organisations present were African Clean Energy, Flood tags, Hospitainer, Nijhuis Industries-SEMiLLA Sanitation and TU Delft. Overall, it felt like a celebration of the Netherlands’ contribution to innovative work in the humanitarian sector and allowed many organisations to meet and collaborate further.
